Rural Development

The 5H program of the Art of Living aims that every village /rural area in the country has Homes for the Homeless, Healthcare, Hygiene, Human Values and Harmony in diversity. The main thrust of the program is eradication of poverty, misery, diseases and ensuring peace and harmony in rural areas. The youth from these areas are trained under the Youth Leadership Training Program (YLTP). The YLTP program combines spirituality as well as leadership training and gives young people the skills, motivation and ability to initiate and lead service projects in their own villages based on local needs.

The 5H program clearly aims to bring about social as well as economic self reliance for both individuals and communities at the grassroots and ensure that the effects achieved through the program are long-term and sustainable.

Care for Environment

"Our connection with the environment is our first level of experience, and one of the most important. If our environment is clean and positive, it has a positive impact on all the other layers of our existence. As a result, they come into balance and we experience a greater sense of peace and connection within ourselves and with others around us."

Respect and care for our planet and our environment forms an intrinsic aspect of spirituality that forms the basis of the Art of Living. A healthy future for our coming generations is predicated on how we care for our environment in the present. Various projects have been initiated by the organization in water conservation, tree plantations, indigenous species protection as well as chemical free farming. An integral part of ensuring nature conservation is nurturing values about environmental issues with children and young adults. Awareness
programs for youth are a vital aspect of the organization's long term vision in this direction.

Various environment projects have been spearheaded by Art of Living volunteers under the vision of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The major initiatives undertaken include:

Mission Green Earth - Large scale tree plantations all across the country

Meri Dilli Meri Yamuna (My Delhi My Yamuna) – To clean the Yamuna river and mobilize the efforts of    the citizens of Delhi towards this initiative.

Development of Natueco farming (Nature Ecological Farming) – To provide an effective alternative    to Chemical based farming.

The 'Deepening Roots' initiative - To bring together educators in the fields of permaculture, health and    wellness, meditation and leadership development to create youth leaders who would promote awareness and    practices of sustainable agriculture.

Sri Sri Beejkosh (Seed Bank) – To focus on promotion of indigenous seeds and traditional agricultural    methods including adoption of organic farming along with avoidance of the usage of hybrids.

The Art of Living Goshala – To preserve Indigenous Cows and aid in the production of organic, chemical    free fertilizers and pesticides.

Care for Environment

” Every parent would like to have a child whose personality shines wherever the child goes. It is the personality that is appreciated everywhere. Such pleasing personality is what is the main aim of this education.“

Revolutionizing Education: The Free School Education Program

The vision of creating a divine society begins with strengthening education at the grassroots. True education is one that includes not just academics but also an environment in which a child's inner talents blossom to their fullest potential. Art of Living schools are dedicated to provide holistic education that is aimed at all-round development of children. The methodology promotes cognitive, physical, emotional, social and spiritual growth. Activities undertaken by volunteers range from creating awareness, ensuring free uniforms, mid-day meals, books,
and transportation to building free schools in remote areas.

Impact of the Program:

• 117 free schools have been set up in tribal, rural and slum regions in India

• More than 12,000 children have benefitted from the program

• Value based education in a stress free environment

• Enabling students to develop academic as well as creative skills.

Vision

Around 68 percent of India's population is considered rural and 8 percent is classified as tribal. Of the total population 28 percent is under the age of 15. Given the challenges of promoting education in rural areas it is estimated that 60 million children or more are without access to early childhood education. Against this backdrop the Art of Living's Dharma Sthamba Yojana (DSY) aims to extend the free school education program to more and more children in tribal, rural and slum areas. You can contribute and be a part of this unique and fulfilling cause of spreading smiles along with value-based learning to the future of this country - Our Children!
